Jim van Basten, from trainee to CNC miller and CAD/CAM programmer

Jim van Basten from Echt has been employed as a CNC milling machine operator on a 5-axis and CAD/CAM programmer for more than 10 years. We spoke with Jim about his career at Lucassen and what makes his job so great.

‘I ended up at Lucassen through an internship. At the time, I was studying mechanics in Belgium, where my final year internship was at Lucassen. Even though the level of education in Belgium is high, I still followed the BBL Training Level 3 and 4 in machining at Lucassen. It was the right step for me to get Dutch diplomas as well. After obtaining those diplomas I have always continued to work at Lucassen’.

As a little boy, it was not immediately clear to Jim that he wanted to work in engineering, but at school it soon became clear that Jim preferred working with his hands and so engineering became his interest. He prefers the combination of working as a milling machine and programmer: ‘Working in front of the computer all day is not for me, I also want “something to do”. That’s why this job in particular suits me so well, here I can combine both.’

With his 10 years of work experience, this is also the time for Jim to teach the young batch the finer points of the trade. ‘At the moment, I help our BBL graduates where necessary and that is now mainly with programming. For the future, I think it would be nice to do a training course to become a practical trainer, so that I can also officially guide students towards their diploma.’

‘The great thing about working at Lucassen is that here you get to do everything yourself. You’re not either a miller or a programmer here; the whole process is my responsibility. In addition, we also have a very nice group of colleagues, which is not only pleasant while working, but certainly also makes the parties always fun!’.
